Iron-On Chenille Patches
Source Of Chenille Patches
“Chenille” comes from French, originally meaning “caterpillar,” because chenille yarn has a surface with numerous short, fluffy fibers, resembling the soft down of a caterpillar, hence the name Chenille.
Chenille yarn consists of core yarn and fluffy fibers. A special twisting method distributes the short fibers vertically across the yarn surface, creating a soft, full, velvety effect. Its most prominent characteristics are its soft, fluffy, highly textured, thick surface with a pronounced 3D effect.
Similar to embroidered patches, custom chenille patches offer three edge cutting options: heat cutting, laser cutting, and overlocking. The appropriate method can be chosen based on individual needs.
Custom Chenille Patch Border

Overlocked Edge
Overlock chenille patches have a distinct raised ring around the edge, suitable for regularly shaped patches, such as rectangles and squares. The width is generally set at 2-5 mm, and it has a wider range of applications, commonly seen in clothing and backpacks.

Laser Cutting
Laser cutting is a compromise option, also suitable for complex and irregular patterns. The absence of seams around the edges greatly satisfies your customization needs.

Heat Cutting
Unlike overlock stitching, heat-cut fabric patches have smooth, clean edges. If your design is intricate and complex, heat-cutting is a better option.
Custom Chenille Patch Backing Options

No Backing
The most common type has no backing and can be secured by sewing at any location.

No Backing
The chenille patch has a thinner, harder plastic backing that provides support, allowing the patch to maintain its support for longer periods.

Velcro Backing
The back features Velcro fasteners made of tiny hooks that can be attached to the napped surface.

Ironing Adhesive Backing
By applying pressure to the chenille patch with adhesive backing using a heat press or iron, the adhesive can be attached to the fabric in approximately 10-15 seconds. This method is suitable for DIY crafts or small-batch production.

3M Self-Adhesive Paper
Using pre-cut 3M adhesive backing on chenille fabric patches is more suitable for short-term use compared to other methods. Examples include DIY projects, event material preparation, and promotional material production.

Safety Pin
When a safety pin is attached to the back of a badge, it can be used in any setting. Simply attach the pin to the fabric surface. Its biggest advantage is quick installation and removal, making it ideal for uniforms and bags.

Chenille Patches Application Cases
Chenille patches, with their suede texture, pronounced 3D effect, and retro-sporty style, are widely used in clothing, hats, bags, and trendy brand products. Compared to ordinary embroidered patches, chenille patches emphasize visual impact, tactile experience, and a high-end decorative effect. They were first used on American letterman jackets as school badges, team logos, or honorary symbols, and have since been frequently used in baseball caps, sweatshirts, and other products.

Custom Chenille Patches for Hats
Letterman Jackets display students’ schools, athletic achievements, team honors, and individual identities through chenille letter stickers; therefore, Chenille Patches are also known as Varsity Patches, Letterman Patches, or Chenille Letters.
Common Chenille Patch types on Varsity Jackets include:
• Chenille letter stickers (single letters, school abbreviations, etc.)
• Number stickers (team numbers, year joined, year graduated)
• Mascot stickers (eagle, lion, bear)
• Medals of honor (regional champion, MVP)
• Name and year

Custom Woven Patches On Hats
Chenille patches are commonly found on the front, side panels, or back straps of baseball caps, trucker hats, five-panel caps, and bucket hats, giving them a distinct retro schoolgirl look, sports team logos, and streetwear vibe.
Assembly Method: Since hats have a curved surface, directly ironing hot melt glue can easily cause it to come unglued, especially at the curved front. A more reliable method is to sew it on, or have the patch embroidered/attached to the cap panel during production before attaching the hat. Compared to traditional embroidered logos, chenille patches have a more pronounced three-dimensional velvet effect, making them particularly suitable for creating retro schoolgirl, streetwear, and high-end custom apparel collections.
